Booking choice: The deluxe Grand Circle coach, from $100 per person. Check dates Tour details
The tours tell you very little about packing, and most of what they leave out you discover at a stop: no towel at the snorkel beach, a card at a cash-only shrimp truck, a T-shirt at the Pali Lookout in a gale.
This list comes from the operators' own listings, Hawaii's official rules and what guests mention in reviews.
The quick answer
Wear your swimsuit under your clothes if the tour swims, and pack a towel, a dry change, reef-safe sunscreen (Hawaii bans oxybenzone and octinoxate), a light jacket for the windy Pali, a refillable water bottle and cash for food and tips. Be outside your pickup point 5 to 10 minutes early: the coach leaves Hilton Hawaiian Village at 6:40 AM.
What should you wear on a circle island tour?
Light layers, comfortable walking shoes or sturdy sandals, a hat and sunglasses.
The Island and You listing asks for "comfortable clothing and shoes, as well as a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a water bottle", and that list works for every tour. You walk on paved paths, lava rock at the blowhole and sand at the beaches; flip-flops are fine at the beach and poor on the Waimea Valley trail.
Layers matter more than you expect. Air-conditioned buses run cold, the Pali Lookout is windy at 1,200 feet, and the North Shore is hot by midday. The Turtle Tours listing notes it "operates in all weather conditions, please dress appropriately", so a thin rain shell is worth carrying from October on.

Do you need a swimsuit and towel on a circle island tour?
Yes on the snorkel tours and the Waimea Falls tour; towels are almost never supplied.
Snorkel gear is included on four tours. Towels are not: Aloha Sunshine says to bring your own, and Go Tours lists swimsuit and towel as excluded for the waterfall. Wear the swimsuit from the morning and pack a quick-dry towel and a dry change in a plastic bag.
| Tour | Swim stop | Bring |
|---|---|---|
| Turtle snorkel tour | 60-min snorkel | Swimsuit, towel, dry clothes |
| Aloha Sunshine loop | 60 min at Pua'ena Point | Swimsuit, own towel |
| 13-seat van tour | 60-min snorkel | Swimsuit, towel |
| Nui snorkel loop | 30 min at Pua'ena Point | Swimsuit, towel |
| Waimea waterfall tour | Waimea Falls, if open | Swimsuit, towel, water shoes |
| E Noa Majestic | Quick dip at the falls | Change of clothes |
| Deluxe coach | No swim stop | Nothing extra |
An hour of snorkeling at a North Shore turtle beach, gear included.

Sunscreen without oxybenzone or octinoxate; Hawaii has banned the sale of those since 2021.
Under Act 104 (2018), selling or distributing sunscreen containing oxybenzone or octinoxate in Hawaii without a prescription has been illegal since 1 January 2021. The law exists because both chemicals harm coral. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are the easy choice.
Put it on at the hotel. Waimea Valley asks swimmers to keep oils and products out of the falls pool, and snorkel guides will tell you the same at the reef. Reapply after lunch: the North Shore sun is strong by 1 PM.
Do you need a jacket for the Pali Lookout?
A light windbreaker, yes; the Pali is 1,200 feet up and the trade winds blow hard through the gap.
Hawaii State Parks describes the Nuuanu Pali Lookout as a place where "winds are usually so strong that one can lean against the wall of wind". Hats fly off. Loose sunglasses too. It is cooler than Waikiki, and in a passing shower it is cold.
The stop lasts 10 to 20 minutes on the tours that include it: the deluxe coach, the Waimea tour, E Noa and the 13-seat van. A packable jacket that lives in your bag the rest of the day is plenty.

How much cash should you bring on a circle island tour?
Around $40 to $60 a person: lunch, a Dole Whip, a snack and a tip for the guide.
Several of the best food stops are trucks and stands, and Aloha Sunshine warns that many are cash-only. Lunch is included only on E Noa and the food tour; everywhere else, plan on paying for a plate. The Waimea tour tells guests to bring cash for lunch and gratuities, and Aloha Sunshine notes that tipping your guide in cash is appreciated.
Paid extras along the way, if your stop is long enough: the Dole Plantation train ($15 adult) and maze ($10). The lunch guide lists every food stop and the green fee post explains what Hawaii's new 2026 visitor tax does and does not touch.

Snack, bottled water and a restroom on the coach, so the bag stays light. Six real stops on the full day.

Sit near the front, watch the horizon, eat light, and take medicine before the bus leaves, not after.
The loop is a lot of road, and the windward highway and the climbs to the Pali curve. The CDC's motion sickness advice for travelers: focus on the skyline or a far-off object, avoid heavy meals before travel, and take motion sickness medicine before you set off. Ginger helps some people.
Ask for a front seat when you board; on the minibuses guides usually sort it out if you ask early. Garlic shrimp followed by a bus ride is a known risk. A lighter lunch is the smart move if you are prone.
What time is pickup on a circle island tour?
Early: from 6:40 AM on the deluxe coach, 7 to 8 AM on most minibuses, 8 AM on the food tour.
Pickup windows from the listings, October 2026:
| Tour | Pickup | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Deluxe coach, full day | 6:40 to 7:10 AM | Hilton Hawaiian Village, Hokulani, Hyatt Regency, Waikiki Beach Marriott |
| Deluxe coach, half day | 7:40 to 8:10 AM | Same four stops |
| Aloha Sunshine loop | 7 to 8 AM | Waikiki; time texted the day before |
| 13-seat van tour | From 7 AM (sunrise in winter) | Waikiki and Ala Moana only |
| Local food tour | 8:00 to 8:55 AM | Aqua Palms to Kahala Hotel |
| Waimea | Fixed time | Six Waikiki meeting points, no hotel door |

What should you leave at the hotel?
Big bags, valuables you do not need, and anything you would mind leaving on the bus at a beach stop.
Turtle Tours recommends a small day bag, and that is the right size: water, sunscreen, towel, jacket, cash, phone. Space under minibus seats is limited, and you carry the bag at every stop. Leave jewelry at the hotel if you plan to swim.
Bring a refillable bottle and fill it before pickup. One food-tour guest's only complaint was water: "One suggestion would be to provide more water or water stops to refill bottles" (Sheryl, Sep 2026). If you are planning a Pearl Harbor day as well, note that bags are not allowed at the USS Arizona Memorial; the visitor center has paid storage (Pearl Harbor and city tour). Pickup from 6:40 AM, a restroom on board and 90 minutes in Haleiwa.

Yes, under your clothes, if your tour snorkels or visits Waimea Falls. There is rarely time to change twice.
