Around the island with a snorkel

Nui Tours' big loop advertises 16 locations, makes 12 real stops and fits a snorkel at Pua'ena Point near Haleiwa between the farms. It is the cheapest full circle we list and has the most stop time on paper.

Grand Tour Around the Island with Snorkeling

About this experience

The listing says 16 locations. Four are drive-bys: Makapu'u Beach, Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Haleiwa town. The other 12 are real stops. Diamond Head, the Halona Blowhole, Sandy Beach, Waimanalo and Mokoli'i get 20 minutes each; then an hour on the North Shore, 20 at Kahuku Farms, 20 at Waimea Bay, an hour at the North Shore Macadamia Nut Company, 30 minutes snorkeling at Pua'ena Point, an hour at Dole and 20 at Green World Coffee Farm. Add it up and you get about six hours, which only fits the long end of the 8 to 10 hour range.

Snorkel gear, snacks and soft drinks are included, which almost no one else offers at this price. The swim is 30 minutes at Pua'ena Point Beach Park, a shallow, lagoon-like cove beside Haleiwa that is calm in summer and turns into a surf spot from about October to early May. Turtles show up often there; nobody promises them. Nui runs buses of 25 to 50 seats at the same fare, so you may share the day with a full coach, and the listing warns that weather can close some locations.

Pickup is at your hotel or the closest spot a bus can legally stop, usually a couple of minutes' walk. One low-rated review on the listing reports a bus 30 minutes late against a 7:00 AM pickup; be outside early and keep your phone on.

Tips before you book

  • Swimsuit on under your clothes: 30 minutes is short once you count changing.
  • Pua'ena Point is a summer snorkel. From October the surf builds, and the stop can become a beach walk.
  • Keep your phone on the morning of the tour; pickups shift with traffic.
  • Eat a proper lunch during the North Shore hour. Snacks will not carry you to the evening.
